Q&A: ‘Sunday Morning’ reflects on CT music scene
A patchwork of gig flyers wallpaper the entrance to Sunday Morning’s practice space in suburban Connecticut.
Journeymen of the broad New England music scene, Sunday Morning stands philosophically embodied by that facade.
They’ve played alongside nationally recognized acts like Boston Manor and Microwave while remaining closely connected to bands taking the stage at local bars and clubs in their immediate area and up here in Central Massachusetts.
They joined a new bill playing alongside new bands as part of Five By Two’s live session series. While setting up for the gig, they stopped to answer some questions about their sound and their scene…
Dakota Antelman – Five By Two Music Journalist: You have spoken about that display of gig flyers from show’s you’ve done. What’s it been like to perform alongside some of the bigger groups you’ve been involved with?
Parker Dumont – Sunday Morning Bassist: Being able to talk with the guys from Boston Manor and Microwave, then being able to talk to the singer from Homesafe and have them remember us from the last time we opened for them was out of this world. Being able to chat about bass gear with Homesafe was especially amazing for me.
DA: With other bands, including more local ones, how have you seen your style influenced by the company you keep?
PD: The bands that we’ve played with the most, each one of us have a niche. We’re kind of similar in the sense that we have some sort of punk incarnation. But our friends Mighty Tortuga, for example, are a little more poppy and cheery. They make some really great songs that have some extra effects on them.
Then another band in our area, Say What You Will, they’re a lot more on the pop punk side of it so when we play with them we’re getting a really good spread of people coming to the show and you really get to see the community coming out in full force.
DA: What’s up next for Sunday Morning?
Westly Benjunas – Sunday Morning, Vocalist, Guitarist: We went to the studio in February. We recorded an EP and had plans to do it in July or this summer. But then, not only the coronavirus, but all the social justice things happened. It’s just not the right time to release music. There’s more pressing matters.
